Creswell Crags
Archaeological Site Limestone gorge with Paleolithic caves and engravings
On the Nottinghamshire-Derbyshire border, Creswell Crags is a limestone gorge with Ice Age caves, Palaeolithic engravings, fossil remains and a visitor centre offering guided cave tours.
Creswell Crags is a limestone gorge on the Nottinghamshire/Derbyshire border in England that contains a complex of caves with Palaeolithic archaeological deposits. It is important for archaeological evidence of Ice Age human activity, including cave art, tool assemblages and faunal remains.
Several named caves within the gorge preserve stratified deposits and surface engravings and have been the focus of systematic archaeological excavation; the site is accompanied by a museum and a visitor centre that run guided cave tours. The caves and surrounding cliffs provide a compact area for studying human occupation of northern Europe during the last Ice Age.
Excavations at Creswell Crags have recovered stone tools, animal bones and engravings that date to episodes of Palaeolithic occupation over tens of thousands of years, and the site has been subject to archaeological research since the 19th century. Protective measures and visitor management aim to conserve the fragile deposits and rock art while allowing public access through guided visits.
The gorge lies in rural Nottinghamshire/Derbyshire countryside near the village of Creswell in central England, within driving distance of regional cities but set in a rural limestone landscape.
- Palaeolithic art: Contains the northernmost known Palaeolithic cave art and evidence of Ice Age occupation in Britain, with archaeological layers and engravings preserved in several caves.
What to See #
- Robin Hood Cave: Robin Hood Cave is one of the principal caves with evidence of Ice Age human occupation and Palaeolithic finds recovered during excavations.
- Church Hole Cave: Church Hole contains stratified archaeological deposits and was one of the early excavation sites yielding animal bones and artefacts.
- Pin Hole Cave: Pin Hole Cave has produced important Palaeolithic finds, including human-modified bone and flint artefacts recovered by archaeological teams.
