Creswell Crags

Creswell Crags is a limestone gorge on the Nottinghamshire/Derbyshire border in England that contains a complex of caves with Palaeolithic archaeological deposits. It is important for archaeological evidence of Ice Age human activity, including cave art, tool assemblages and faunal remains.

Several named caves within the gorge preserve stratified deposits and surface engravings and have been the focus of systematic archaeological excavation; the site is accompanied by a museum and a visitor centre that run guided cave tours. The caves and surrounding cliffs provide a compact area for studying human occupation of northern Europe during the last Ice Age.

Excavations at Creswell Crags have recovered stone tools, animal bones and engravings that date to episodes of Palaeolithic occupation over tens of thousands of years, and the site has been subject to archaeological research since the 19th century. Protective measures and visitor management aim to conserve the fragile deposits and rock art while allowing public access through guided visits.

The gorge lies in rural Nottinghamshire/Derbyshire countryside near the village of Creswell in central England, within driving distance of regional cities but set in a rural limestone landscape.
