Crespi d'Adda

Crespi d’Adda is a purpose-built 19th-century industrial village on the Adda river in Lombardy, developed around a textile factory and designed to house workers and provide social services. The ensemble is notable for the preservation of industrial, residential and communal buildings that illustrate the paternalistic company-town model of the period.

The settlement includes the factory complex, rows of workers’ houses, a manager’s villa, school buildings and a church, all arranged to serve the industrial community and to reflect period planning principles. Streets, housing types and communal buildings present a coherent built environment from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

The village was established by the Crespi family as an integrated industrial and social complex to support textile production and worker welfare; it remained closely linked to the factory’s operation over decades and has retained much of its original layout and structures.

Crespi d’Adda is located on the banks of the river Adda in the municipality of Capriate San Gervasio, between the cities of Milan and Bergamo in northern Italy, where the river valley provided water power and transport links important to the factory.
