Creag Meagaidh is a mountain massif in the western Highlands of Scotland, designated as a National Nature Reserve and known for its large corries, cliffs and plateau. It is a recognizable Munro-area massif offering both serious mountaineering and hillwalking.
The area attracts hillwalkers to its broad summit plateau and technical climbers to steep north-facing cliffs and gullies. Vegetation includes montane grassland and heather, and the reserve supports upland birdlife and typical Highland flora.
The massif formed through Scottish Highland uplift and glacial erosion, producing deep corries and steep rock faces. It has been managed as a nature reserve to protect its upland habitats while accommodating traditional estate uses and recreational climbing.
Located in the western Highlands, Creag Meagaidh lies inland from the Great Glen and the A86 corridor, occupying upland ground above surrounding glens and lochs and accessed from local roadheads into the mountain interior.
- Height and climbing: The massif reaches roughly 1,130 metres at its highest point and includes extensive north-facing cliffs used for winter ice and mixed climbing.
What to See #
- Coire Ardair: A deep corrie with steep cliffs that is a focal point for winter climbing and contains a staffed bothy used by mountaineers in the Coire Ardair area.
- Summit plateau and ridges: The summit plateau and associated ridgelines rising to the highest tops used for hiking and scrambling in summer and winter.

- Creag Meagaidh is a designated national nature reserve - follow posted routes and signage to protect fragile montane habitats and nesting birds.
- Start walks early in the day in summer to reduce exposure to midges and to take advantage of calmer weather for high-level views; afternoons are more changeable in the Highlands.
