Craigievar Castle

Craigievar Castle is a 17th-century castellated tower house near Alford in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, completed around 1626 and noted for its well-preserved baronial architecture. It is famous for its pink harled exterior and turreted silhouette.

The site is best known for its exterior architecture and the survival of original interior features such as period plasterwork and timber fittings, which illustrate the domestic layout of a Scottish laird’s house across several storeys. The compact footprint and tall tower mean many of the principal rooms are stacked vertically across four or more floors.

Construction and later alterations were carried out for the Forbes family in the early 17th century; the building has remained largely intact since that period and has been conserved as a historic house rather than a military fortress. Conservation and management in the 20th and 21st centuries have focused on preserving historic finishes and preventing moisture damage to the harling and timber.

The castle sits beside a minor road south of the village of Alford in Aberdeenshire, on farmland typical of northeast Scotland. The nearest larger centre is Aberdeen to the east; the site is accessed by country lanes and is set in a rural lowland landscape.
