The Cowichan Valley has been home to the Cowichan First Nation for millennia, and the lake later became the focus of logging and settlement during Euro-Canadian development of the island. The town and recreational infrastructure developed around the lake’s outlet and river access.
Cowichan Lake lies inland on central-southern Vancouver Island, with the town of Lake Cowichan at its southeast end and the Cowichan River draining the lake toward the island’s east coast.

Cowichan Lake is about a 45-60 minute drive northwest from Duncan on Vancouver Island via the Trans-Canada Highway (BC-1) then local routes (Cowichan Lake Rd). The closest major centres are Duncan and Nanaimo; regional buses service nearby towns but schedules are limited.
