Covent Garden
Area Historic London district with market and theaters
A central London district around a historic market, Covent Garden is visited for street performers, boutique shops, the Royal Opera House, theatres and a range of restaurants and cafés.
Covent Garden is a central London district in the West End known for its pedestrianised piazza, market, theatres and street entertainment. Historically a fruit-and-vegetable market, the area has been redeveloped as a commercial and cultural centre with shops, restaurants and performance venues.
The large central Piazza is the focal point for street performers and outdoor events and is surrounded by galleries, shops and the historic market building with stalls selling crafts, antiques and specialty goods. The Royal Opera House is a major cultural landmark located at the eastern edge of the district, hosting opera, ballet and large-scale theatre productions.
Covent Garden’s market building and adjacent streets contain a mixture of independent retailers, chain stores, bars and restaurants, and the district is widely used for both daytime shopping and evening theatre-going. The 17th-century St. Paul’s Church (the Actors’ Church) overlooks the piazza and is linked historically to the theatre community.
The district sits in central London’s West End, within walking distance of Trafalgar Square and Leicester Square, and is well served by the London Underground and frequent buses, making it a major pedestrianised hub for visitors and residents.
- Street performance times: Street performance and live entertainment are concentrated in the central piazza, especially in afternoons and early evenings when pedestrian activity peaks.
- Transport and location: The area sits in London's West End and is served by Covent Garden and nearby tube stations, making it a major pedestrianised retail and theatre hub in central London.

- Market Building and Apple Market: Apple Market and Market Building - a historic covered market area selling crafts, antiques and specialist goods, with seasonal stalls concentrated in the central piazza.

How to Get to Covent Garden #
Covent Garden is in central London. Many central London buses stop on the Strand and nearby streets, and the area is easily reached on foot from other West End destinations.
Tips for Visiting Covent Garden #
- Visit very early (before 10:00) on weekdays to see the piazza and market stalls with far fewer street performers and tourists.
- Use Leicester Square or Holborn Underground stations to approach Covent Garden on foot; the Covent Garden tube station and the main piazza can be extremely congested at peak times.
- Skip the busiest square and explore the adjacent lanes such as Floral Court and Neal's Yard for quieter independent shops, cafes and artisan stalls that many visitors miss.
