Cottian Alps
Mountains Alpine range along France–Italy border with high passes
A mountain range along the France-Italy border, home to high peaks such as Monviso; visitors come for alpine hiking, mountain passes, summer trails and winter skiing across valleys and tiny mountain towns.
The Cottian Alps are a section of the Western Alps straddling the France-Italy border, composed of rugged peaks, glaciated valleys and mountain passes. The range includes high summits and has played a long role as a corridor between the Italian Peninsula and western Europe.
Prominent features include the Monviso massif, whose summit reaches 3,841 metres, numerous 3,000-metre peaks, and historical passes that have served trade and military movements for centuries. The area supports alpine ecosystems, summer grazing and mountain recreation such as hiking and climbing.
The range has been crossed since antiquity and was important for Roman and later communications between regions; passes were improved and used in successive historical periods. Modern alpine roads and railways follow many traditional routes.
Geographically the Cottian Alps lie along the southern rim of the Western Alps, forming part of the border between southeastern France (Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur and adjacent regions) and northwestern Italy; the range descends into valleys leading to towns on both sides of the border.
- Alpine chain: The range forms part of the main Alpine chain along the border between southeastern France and northwestern Italy and includes multiple peaks above 3,000 metres.
What to See #
- Monviso (Monte Viso): The Monviso massif, whose highest summit reaches 3,841 metres and is a prominent landmark on the Italian side of the range.
- Major passes: Historic Alpine passes such as the Col de Montgenèvre that have long linked French and Italian valleys and trade routes through the range.
How to Get to Cottian Alps #
The Cottian Alps form a mountain chain along the French-Italian border south of Turin. Access depends on which sector you are visiting: from Turin you can drive into the Susa Valley and along the A32/E70 toward Susa, Oulx and Bardonecchia to reach valley towns that provide trailheads into the Cottian Alps; on the French side main access roads include routes through Briançon/Gap and the Col de Montgenèvre area. Distances from Turin vary by valley (typically tens of kilometres); once in the valleys you continue on regional roads to trailheads or ski resorts.
Tips for Visiting Cottian Alps #
- Plan seasonally: late spring to early autumn is best for hiking and access to high passes, while winter is reserved for ski touring where routes are open; always check local road and pass closures before you travel.
- Pick a specific gateway valley or town as your base (French or Italian side) and use local trailhead maps and mountain refuges to structure day trips-the range is large and itineraries work best when focused on one sector.
- Avoid peak summer weekends on the most popular trails by hiking midweek or starting very early in the day; many visitors concentrate on the main cols and alpine lakes, so quieter side valleys offer the same scenery with fewer people.
Best Time to Visit Cottian Alps #
Summer for hiking and alpine access, winter for snow sports-choose season based on whether you want trails or skiing.
