How to Get to Costa de Caparica#
Costa da Caparica is a long, sandy beach strip on Lisbon’s south bank; most visitors arrive via Lisbon (LIS) then use a mix of metro, ferry and TST buses to reach the shore. Buses from Almada/Pragal are the most direct public‑transport option once you cross the Tagus.
Lisbon Humberto Delgado Airport (LIS): The main international gateway for Costa da Caparica is Lisbon Airport. From the airport take the metro (Red Line) into the city and transfer to Cais do Sodré (via the Green/Yellow lines) or travel to the Sete Rios/Entrecampos hub and continue by bus - total journey to Costa da Caparica is typically 45-75 minutes depending on connections. A taxi from the airport to Costa da Caparica takes about 25-35 minutes (depending on traffic).
Faro (FAO) / Other airports: Seasonal flights sometimes land at Faro (FAO) but Faro is a long drive (≈2.5-3 hours) and not a practical option for most trips to Costa da Caparica.
Train: There is no direct train to Costa da Caparica; the nearest rail hub is Lisbon (Cais do Sodré, Roma-Areeiro, or Entrecampos depending on route). From Lisbon’s train/ferry hubs you switch to buses or ferries and then to the south bank services.
Bus: From Lisbon you can reach Costa da Caparica by Transpraia / TST buses from Almada/Pragal or directly from Cais do Sodré via a combination of train/ferry then TST bus. The main bus operator on the south bank is Transportes Sul do Tejo (TST) - a bus from Pragal to Costa da Caparica takes about 15-25 minutes and city-to-beach connections from central Lisbon (including transfer at Cais do Sodré + ferry to Cacilhas + TST bus) typically take 40-60 minutes. Expect single fares in the range of €1.50-€3.00 within the Lisbon integrated network depending on routes and cards (Viva Viagem).
How to Get Around Costa de Caparica#
Costa da Caparica is best reached from Lisbon (LIS) via metro + ferry + TST bus or by direct buses from Almada/Pragal. For getting around, TST buses serve the strip - taxis or a hire car are convenient for luggage or off‑peak travel.
- TST bus (Transportes Sul do Tejo) (€1.50-€3) - TST runs frequent buses between Pragal/Almada and the various points along Costa da Caparica. From the Pragal transport hub it’s a short 10-25 minute ride depending on where you get off. Buy tickets on board or use the Viva Viagem card where applicable.
- Lisbon metro + ferry (€3-€6 (combined)) - A common route is metro from the airport or city centre to Cais do Sodré, ferry across the Tagus to Cacilhas, then TST bus or taxi to Costa da Caparica. Metro fares in Lisbon are modest (single tickets from €1.50) and ferries cost a few euros; combined this is economical but involves transfers.
- Taxi / Rideshare (€20-€45) - Taxis or rideshares from Lisbon airport or central Lisbon are direct and faster, typically 20-40 minutes depending on traffic. They are sensible if travelling with surfboards or lots of kit, but can be substantially pricier than bus+ferry combos.
- Car rental (€25+/day) - Driving gives the most flexibility for beach hopping along the Caparica coast and nearby towns. Parking can be busy in summer weeks but there are large parking areas near popular beaches; expect motorway tolls when coming from outside Lisbon.
- Bicycle / E‑scooter (€3-€15/hour) - In summer many visitors use bicycles or e‑scooters to move along the promenade and between beaches; short rentals are widely available in tourist areas. Good for short hops and sightseeing but less practical for long day trips to Lisbon.
- Walking - Much of Costa da Caparica is eminently walkable along the seafront and between neighbouring beaches. Walking is the best way to move between adjacent coves and beach bars in the high season.
