Cosquer Cave
Archaeological Site Submerged cave near Marseille with Paleolithic wall paintings
A submerged Paleolithic cave off the Provence coast containing Ice Age paintings; the original site is closed to general entry, studied by specialists and of interest to visitors of prehistoric art.
Cosquer Cave is a submerged prehistoric cave located on the Mediterranean coast near Marseille in southern France. It is notable for its Upper Paleolithic parietal art and a submerged entrance discovered in the late 20th century.
The site contains paintings and engravings of animals - including horses, ibex and marine life - and human signs such as hand stencils and schematic figures, created during the Upper Paleolithic. Because the cave entrance is below the current sea level and the interior is fragile, the original site is not open to the public; scholars study it under controlled conditions.
The cave was discovered in 1985 by diver Henri Cosquer; subsequent research showed the artworks date to the Upper Paleolithic, made by hunter-gatherer groups tens of thousands of years ago. Changes in sea level since the Ice Age submerged the original entrance and isolated the decorated chambers until modern discovery.
The cave lies on the Calanques coast near Marseille in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region of France, with its entrance under the Mediterranean shoreline. The site is managed for scientific study and conservation rather than tourism.
- Access restrictions: Public access to the original cave is prohibited because the entrance is submerged and the chamber is vulnerable to damage; research and conservation are tightly controlled.
- Discovery: The cave was discovered by diver Henri Cosquer in 1985 and has an underwater entrance located well below present sea level.

Tips for Visiting Cosquer Cave #

- If interested in Paleolithic art, read up on Henri Cosquer's 1991 testimony and the 1999 dating reports to appreciate the context before viewing reproductions.
- Respect the science: many paintings are fragile and the site's story is one of conservation; avoid speculative souvenir hunting or amateur photography of images from the cave.
