The Coronation Cathedral in Alba Iulia is an early 20th-century Romanian Orthodox cathedral built for the coronation of Romania’s monarchs after World War I. It was completed in time for the coronation of King Ferdinand I and Queen Marie in 1922.
Commissioned and supported by the Romanian state after the union of Transylvania with Romania, the building functions as a cathedral and a national commemorative site. It is located within the Alba Iulia Citadel and forms part of the city’s modern ceremonial ensemble.
The cathedral’s role has been largely ecclesiastical and symbolic since its construction, serving as a site for major national and religious ceremonies. Architecturally it reflects styles and motifs chosen to express national identity in the interwar period.
It stands inside the star-shaped Alba Carolina fortress in central Alba Iulia, adjacent to other fortification structures and public squares.
