Coro and its Port (Santa Ana de Coro) is a historic colonial town on Venezuela’s Caribbean coast, noted for an extensive ensemble of Spanish colonial and vernacular buildings using earthen construction techniques. The settlement dates to the early colonial era, with the town founded in 1527.
The historic fabric includes a compact street grid, government and religious buildings, and traditional houses that illustrate construction using adobe and other earth-based materials. The adjacent port area historically connected Coro to trade routes along the Caribbean coast and supported the town’s economic role.
Over time Coro developed under Spanish colonial administration and later republican authorities; its architecture preserves a mix of public and domestic buildings dating across several centuries. Conservation challenges for earthen structures have prompted restoration and stabilization efforts to retain the historic townscape.
The town sits on the northwest coast of Venezuela in Falcón state, close to coastal plains and the port area that served the settlement. It forms a distinct historic core within the regional coastal landscape.
- Founding and architecture: The town was founded in the early colonial period and retains notable examples of Spanish colonial and vernacular earthen architecture concentrated in the historic core.
