Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape
Historical Site Industrial mining landscape illustrating 18th-19th century metallurgy
This mining landscape records 18th-19th-century engine houses, ore works and coastal mines across Cornwall and West Devon; hikers follow mining trails and visit industrial museums and cliffside ruins.
The Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape is a cultural landscape in southwest England recognized for its historic tin and copper mining industry and its role in the development and global spread of mining technology. It was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2006.
The site covers large swathes of former mining activity across Cornwall and parts of West Devon and includes mine shafts, distinctive stone engine houses, spoil heaps and associated industrial infrastructure. Many of the remains lie close to the coast and in former mining valleys, and the terrain is punctuated by tall masonry engine houses and chimney stacks that remain landmarks in the landscape.
Mining on this landscape expanded markedly from the 18th century into the 19th century, with networks of mines, smelting works and ports supporting extraction and export. Over time operations declined and many mines closed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries; surviving buildings and archaeological remains document these industrial processes and technological developments.
Geographically the property spans parts of Cornwall and West Devon in southwest England, including coastal sections and inland uplands. The area sits on a mix of rugged coastline and working countryside, with towns and villages that grew up around mining activity.
- Visible industrial remains: Landscape includes extensive surface remains of mines, engine houses and processing sites along coastlines and inland valley areas, many visible from public roads and coastal paths.

Driving the A30 then local B-roads connects the coastal engine houses; watch for narrow lanes and official parking at key viewpoints.

- Visit early morning to catch the light on the granite engine houses at St Agnes - the low sun picks out brickwork and coal dust like an old photograph.
- Drive the A3047 and pause at designated viewpoints rather than risking narrow lanes; many engine houses sit within roadside pullouts.
- Bring a local map from the Cornwall Council or the Cornwall Mining World Heritage Site visitor centres - the landscape is a series of dispersed sites and a printed map makes the route intelligible.
