Corfe Castle
Archaeological Site Ruined medieval castle overlooking Dorset village and landscape
On the Isle of Purbeck in Dorset, Corfe Castle’s ruined Norman keep and walls reflect centuries of conflict and royal ownership. Visitors explore ramparts, interpretive panels and the adjacent village.
Corfe Castle is a ruined medieval fortification perched above the village of the same name on the Isle of Purbeck in Dorset, England. The castle was founded in the 11th century and became a royal stronghold before being besieged and deliberately slighted in the English Civil War.
The ruin includes substantial curtain walls, a surviving keep and gatehouse elements that illustrate medieval defensive design and construction. The dramatic remains and the hilltop position create strong panoramic views across the surrounding Purbeck landscape.
Historically the castle originated soon after the Norman Conquest and served successive royal and noble owners; during the Civil War it resisted sieges but was ultimately demolished to prevent further military use. Conservation since the 19th and 20th centuries has stabilised the ruins and opened them to public access.
Corfe Castle stands in the village of Corfe Castle on the Isle of Purbeck, between the towns of Wareham and Swanage in Dorset and is accessible by local roads and footpaths.
- Setting and views: The ruins sit on a prominent hill with clear sightlines across the Isle of Purbeck, making the site visually dramatic and widely photographed.
- Access and management: Managed by the National Trust, the site includes visitor facilities, interpretation and access routes linking to the nearby village and Purbeck countryside.
