Main image

The Cordillera Oriental in Peru is the easternmost major branch of the Peruvian Andes, rising between the high Andean plateau and the Amazon Basin. The range forms a sharp climatic and ecological transition from high-altitude grassland to humid montane and cloud forests.

Slopes of the Cordillera Oriental contain diverse ecosystems and serve as the source for many rivers that flow eastward into the Amazon. Peaks and ridgelines frequently exceed 4,000 metres in elevation, with steep valleys and deep drainage basins carved by river systems.

Geologically the range is part of the Andean orogeny that uplifted the western margin of South America; it stretches along eastern Peru where it bounds the highlands and the Amazonian lowlands.

  • Hydrology: High-elevation ridges and valleys feed numerous tributaries that form headwaters for rivers flowing east into the Amazon Basin.
