The Cordillera Occidental is the westernmost of the three main branches of the Colombian Andes, running north-south within Colombia. It forms a physical barrier between the Pacific coastal plains and the interior Cauca Valley and hosts a variety of montane ecosystems.

This branch includes high forested massifs, cloud forest reserves, and several protected areas that conserve endemic flora and fauna. Elevations vary from low coastal foothills to peaks and ridgelines that create steep river valleys and important watersheds.

The Cordillera Occidental has been used historically for timber, coffee cultivation on lower slopes, and conservation efforts in its protected parks. Infrastructure and settlement are denser in the Cauca Valley to the east, while the Pacific side remains relatively remote and biodiverse.

Geographically it runs parallel to Colombia’s Pacific coastline and extends roughly from the border with Ecuador northward through departments such as Nariño, Cauca, Valle del Cauca and Antioquia, forming the western backbone of Colombia’s Andean system.

  • Geographic role: The western Cordillera separates the Pacific coastal lowlands from the Cauca River valley and contains extensive cloud and montane forests that are important for biodiversity and watersheds.

What to See #

  • Los Farallones de Cali: Los Farallones de Cali are a high, forested massif in the southern section of the western range that include steep escarpments above the Cauca Valley.
  • Munchique and Tatamá areas: Munchique and Tatamá are highland areas and protected natural parks that conserve cloud forest, endemic species, and important watersheds on the western slopes.
