The Cordillera Huayhuash is a compact, high-altitude mountain range in central Peru, noted for its jagged granite peaks and several of the country’s highest summits including Yerupaja and Siula Grande.

The area is best known for the Huayhuash trekking circuit, a multi-day mountain trek that typically takes 7-12 days and circles the central massif, offering close views of peaks that rise above 6,000 metres. Mountaineers approach technical climbs on peaks such as Yerupaja (6,635 m) and Siula Grande (about 6,344 m), while trekkers use a network of campsites and high passes to traverse the range.

The range has been used for centuries by local Andean communities and became a focus for international mountaineering in the 20th century; several notable ascents and exploratory expeditions date from the 1950s onward.

The Cordillera Huayhuash lies in central Peru and spans administrative departments that include Huánuco and adjacent regions; it forms a compact north-south massif within the high Andes.

  • High passes: High passes on the standard trekking circuit commonly exceed 4,400 metres, so altitude acclimatization and proper equipment are essential.

Tips for Visiting Cordillera Huayhuash #

  • Plan your trek in the dry season (May-September) when trails and high passes are most stable; outside those months passes are often snowy and unpredictable.
  • Reserve guides and porters in advance through reputable Huaraz operators-the Huayhuash loop is remote and most trekkers use local teams to manage resupplies, high passes, and campsite logistics.
  • Start early each day to cross high passes in morning firm snow conditions and consider the standard multi‑day circuit (Jahuacocha base) rather than ad‑hoc day hikes; many visitors miss sunrise at Laguna Jahuacocha, which is a highlight of the classic route.
