Cordillera Central (Puerto Rico)
Mountains Mountain range across central Puerto Rico, volcanic peaks
Puerto Rico’s Cordillera Central runs across the island’s interior with peaks, coffee plantations and cloudforest pockets; hikers visit trails, lookouts and mountain towns such as Jayuya.
The Cordillera Central is the principal mountain range running across the centre of Puerto Rico and forms the island’s topographic spine. It contains the highest elevations on the island and a mix of forested peaks and ridges.
The range includes Puerto Rico’s highest summit, important protected forest reserves and numerous trails used for hiking, birdwatching and scientific study. The area supports cloud forest zones and is the source of many of the island’s rivers and streams.
Geologically and ecologically the range has shaped the island’s climate patterns and water resources; its peaks are a focus for outdoor recreation and conservation efforts. Road access reaches many highland towns and trailheads but much of the higher terrain is protected.
Geographically the Cordillera Central runs broadly east-west through the middle of Puerto Rico, with lower coastal plains to the north and south and upland municipalities such as Jayuya and Adjuntas within the range.
- Watershed: Contains Puerto Rico's highest landforms and is the island's principal watershed, feeding rivers that run north and south to the coasts.
What to See #
- Cerro de Punta: The highest summit of Puerto Rico at about 1,338 metres, which is a focal point for hikers and offers panoramic island views.
- Toro Negro and central forest reserves: Protected forest areas and state forests that contain cloud forest habitats, trails and watersheds essential to the island's rivers.

From San Juan, follow PR-52 southwest (the Luis A. Ferré Expressway) toward Ponce and take exit toward PR-143/Adjuntas to access central highland roads.
