Coral Castle
Amusement Park Quirky limestone structure built by single sculptor
In Homestead, Florida, Coral Castle was carved by Edward Leedskalnin from oolitic coral rock; visitors come to inspect the massive sculpted blocks, the on-site museum and guided tours that examine his claimed solo construction methods.
Coral Castle is a private museum and sculptural complex in Homestead, Florida, created by Edward Leedskalnin between the 1920s and 1951. The site is noted for its numerous carved structures made from oolitic limestone, often described as “coral rock.”
The compound contains large quarried and carved stone elements arranged as walls, furniture, and sculptural features; many blocks weigh multiple tons. The work and the methods used by Leedskalnin to move and place the stones are a central part of the site’s public interest.
Leedskalnin, a Latvian émigré, assembled and carved the site over several decades as a private project; after his death the site was preserved and opened to the public as a museum. It now operates as a tourist attraction with on-site interpretation about Leedskalnin and the stonework.
The property sits in suburban Homestead, Miami-Dade County, in southern Florida, reachable by road from Miami and serving day visitors and tourists to the region.
