Lake Scenic Lake District lake popular for boating and walking
A Lake District lake beside the village of Coniston, popular for sailing, rowing and shore walks; walkers use nearby trails linking to Tarn Hows and the Old Man of Coniston.
Coniston Water is a freshwater lake in England’s Lake District National Park, set in a rural valley and long used for recreation and local industry. It is closely associated with regional literary and industrial history through nearby estates and villages.
The lake is popular for boating, walking and lakeside visits, with public slipways and passenger launches operating seasonally and trails circling parts of the shore. Nearby attractions include the lakeside house museum Brantwood, and hill walks such as the ascent of the Old Man of Coniston for panoramic views.
The Coniston area has a mixed history of farming, mining and tourism; in the 19th century it attracted writers and artists and later developed visitor services. In the 20th century the lake gained broader attention because of record-breaking water speed attempts in the 1960s.
The lake lies within the central Lake District in Cumbria, England, immediately adjacent to the village of Coniston on its eastern shore. It is set among the region’s upland fells and is part of the national park’s network of lakes and walking routes.
- Donald Campbell: Associated with Donald Campbell's 1967 water speed record attempt; the lake is central to that modern historic event.
What to See #

- Coniston village: The village of Coniston on the lake's eastern shore, serving as the main access point for visitor services, boat launches and trails.
- Old Man of Coniston: The Old Man of Coniston, a nearby fell popular with hikers that provides panoramic views over the lake and surrounding fells.

- Arrive via Coniston village (the main pier and boat services are there) rather than trying to park at popular roadside viewpoints-local car parks serve walkers and boat users and are a short walk from the shore.
- If you plan to explore viewpoints, include a short climb toward Brim Fell/Old Man of Coniston for panoramic views most casual lakeside visitors miss; allow time for a return along the quieter western shore.
