Conciergerie

The Conciergerie is a medieval palace and former prison on Paris’s Île de la Cité that later served as a principal state prison during the French Revolution. It retains substantial Gothic halls and medieval fabric from its time as part of the royal Palais de la Cité.

The Hall of the Guards and other surviving administrative spaces from the medieval royal residence, plus a reconstructed prisoner cell area associated with Marie Antoinette and other Revolution-era detainees. The building interprets its dual history as a royal palace and later a state prison.

Originally part of the Capetian royal residence, the complex evolved over centuries and was adapted to judicial and detention functions; its prison role was most prominent during the late 18th century. Restoration and museum work in later years has focused on preserving the medieval architecture and presenting the site’s history to the public.

The Conciergerie sits on the western end of the Île de la Cité in central Paris, alongside the Seine and within a short walk of Sainte-Chapelle and Notre-Dame Cathedral.
