Column of Justinian
Monument Ancient triumphal column near Hagia Sophia
A monumental column associated with Emperor Justinian in historic Constantinople; the remnant column site draws those interested in Byzantine monuments and Istanbul’s layered ancient topography.
The Column of Justinian was a monumental column erected in Constantinople during the reign of Emperor Justinian in the 6th century, originally surmounted by a statue of the emperor. It formed one of the large commemorative columns that marked imperial power in the Byzantine capital.
The physical column no longer survives in complete form; its site and some fragmentary elements are known from historical accounts and later reuse of material. Today it is recognised through archaeological study and the historical record rather than as a standing, intact monument visitors can walk around.
The column stood within the ceremonial quarter of Constantinople and has been overbuilt by centuries of urban development in modern Istanbul’s historic peninsula.
The surviving evidence of the column is located in what is now central Istanbul, within the area that held Byzantine public and religious buildings.
