Colonial City of Santo Domingo
Building Historic first European settlement in Americas, UNESCO site
Santo Domingo’s Zona Colonial, founded in the 16th century, preserves cobbled streets, the Alcázar de Colón and the Catedral Primada; tourists tour museums, restaurants and colonial architecture.
The Colonial City of Santo Domingo is the historic core of the Dominican capital, founded in the late 15th century and recognized as the oldest continuously inhabited European-established city in the Americas. Its colonial buildings, plazas and street grid retain an exceptional concentration of early Spanish colonial architecture.
The quarter contains numerous early 16th century monuments including the Catedral Primada de América, the riverside Fortaleza Ozama and the Alcázar de Colón, along with museums, plazas and tight colonial streets. Many sites are open to the public and clustered within a walkable zone, making it a concentrated area for historical sightseeing.
The city was established by the Spanish in the late 1400s and developed rapidly as an administrative and religious center for the New World during the 16th century. Over subsequent centuries buildings were reused, altered and preserved, with restoration and conservation efforts increasing in the 20th century.
The Colonial City lies on the southern bank of the Ozama River on the Caribbean coast of Hispaniola, within Santo Domingo’s Distrito Nacional. It sits at the heart of the modern city and is immediately adjacent to the contemporary downtown area.
- UNESCO listing: UNESCO World Heritage site since 1990, containing the oldest street grid and many first-generation colonial buildings in the Americas.
