How to Get to Cole Bay#
Cole Bay sits on the Dutch side of Saint Martin and is easiest to reach via Princess Juliana International Airport (SXM). Short taxi rides or rental cars from SXM take you into Cole Bay quickly; public minibuses are available for cheap local travel.
Princess Juliana International Airport (SXM): The main international gateway for both the Dutch and French sides of Saint Martin/Sint Maarten. From SXM to Cole Bay (the Dutch-side community near Simpson Bay) is a short drive - taxis are frequent outside arrivals (roughly 10-20 minutes, approximately US$10-20 depending on luggage and exact drop-off). Rental cars and shared airport shuttles are also available at the airport.
(For regional arrivals) If you arrive at nearby islands by ferry (from St. Barth or Anguilla) you will land at their ports rather than SXM; local taxis and water shuttles connect between islands and Cole Bay.
Train: There is no train service on Sint Maarten.
Bus (minibuses) and shared vans: Public minibuses (local lines/collectivos) run along major roads and are the cheapest option for short journeys; fares are typically a few US dollars and depend on distance. Taxis are the faster, more reliable choice for direct trips to Cole Bay from the airport or around the island.
How to Get Around Cole Bay#
Cole Bay is small and walkable for short errands, but the island’s hilly roads and spread-out attractions make taxis or a rental car the most practical options. Minibuses are cheap for short hops but run on informal schedules; use taxis for reliable airport transfers.
- Airport taxi (US$10-20) - Taxis from SXM are the most convenient option to Cole Bay and surrounding areas. Fares are set by distance/zone; expect a short airport transfer to Cole Bay to be in the US$10-20 range and take around 10-20 minutes depending on traffic.
- Public minibuses / shared vans (US$1-4) - Local minibuses run along main roads and are the cheapest option for short hops between towns. They run to informal timetables and use cash fares; be prepared for limited luggage space and variable schedules.
- Car rental (US$40-80 per day) - Renting a car is popular for visitors who want to explore both sides of the island and nearby islands by ferry. Roads are short and well-signed; book in advance in high season.
- Ferry (regional) (US$20-60) - Ferries connect Sint Maarten with nearby islands (St. Barth, Anguilla). If your itinerary includes island-hopping, ferries arrive at Simpson Bay/Marigot-area terminals and can be a convenient way to reach nearby destinations. Timetables vary by season.
- Taxi/ride-hailing apps (US$8-25) - Metered taxis are widely used; fares are higher than minibuses but reliable and convenient for door-to-door trips. Some islands have local ride-hailing or dispatcher services-check availability before travel.
- Walking - Cole Bay is compact enough that short trips around the neighbourhood, shops and waterfront are easily done on foot. Use sidewalks where provided and take care near busy roads.
