Colca Canyon Trek Trail
The Colca Canyon Trek plunges into one of the deepest canyons in southern Peru, linking high Andean plateaus, terraced farming villages and a lush river oasis. In two to three days hikers negotiate steep descents, watch Andean condors and spend nights in basic campsites or village hospedajes.

Best Time to Go:
May to September - the dry season when trails are most stable and views are clearest.
Getting there:
From Arequipa most travelers take buses or shared vans to Chivay and onward to Cabanaconde; the popular start is at the rim above the canyon and most hikers descend toward Sangalle.

Budget travel is straightforward with inexpensive local hospedajes and campsites; many hikers hire a local guide for the 2-day descent-return. A small local park or entry fee may be charged at valley control posts.
Difficulty:
Steep, sustained descents and climbs on rocky, eroded paths with significant altitude change - expect hot sun in the canyon and cold nights on the rim; no technical climbing required but fitness and careful footing are essential.
About Colca Canyon Trek#
The Colca Canyon cuts through the high Andes of the Arequipa region, dropping from arid volcanic plateaus into a deep, terraced valley carved by the river. The route passes agricultural terraces, small Andean villages and exposed viewpoints with wide canyon panoramas.
Highlights include morning visits to the Cruz del Condor viewpoint for condor sightings, the shaded oasis at Sangalle with palms and pools, and the human-scaled terraces and adobe villages such as Cabanaconde. Accommodation is simple - local guesthouses and basic campsites rather than staffed mountain huts.
What makes the trek notable is its accessibility - a true short multi-day canyon experience with cultural encounters, dramatic geology and wildlife opportunities, all close to the city of Arequipa.
Getting There#
Fly into Arequipa and make the road trip to the Colca valley by bus or shuttle to Chivay. From Chivay take a local bus, taxi or arranged transfer up-valley to Cabanaconde where the main trail drops from the rim.
Most people walk downhill from the rim at Cabanaconde toward Sangalle and then either return the same way or continue eastward to rejoin the valley road back to Chivay. Local tour operators in Chivay and Cabanaconde sell guided 1- and 2-day options.
Best Time to Hike#
The trail is most reliable in the dry season - May to September - when afternoon storms are rare and river crossings are lower. The wet season from November to March brings heavy rains, slippery trails and occasional washouts so it is not recommended for casual hikers.
Book high-season nights in Cabanaconde or Sangalle in advance if you want a bed; there are no staffed mountain huts so plan for basic hospedajes or camping, and carry water and sun protection for the hot canyon stretches.
