Coity Castle is a medieval stone castle in the village of Coity, near Bridgend in South Wales, with origins in the 12th century. It served as a local Norman stronghold and later noble residence.
The site is a ruined castle with substantial masonry remains that include a central keep and parts of the enclosing curtain wall. The gatehouse and surviving wall fragments are visible and form most of what remains for public viewing.
Originally established in the 12th century by the local Norman lordly family, the castle passed through several regional owners over the medieval and early modern periods. It was occupied and altered over centuries and fell into partial ruin by the post-medieval era.
The castle stands in the village of Coity adjacent to the town of Bridgend in South Wales, within the historic county area of Glamorgan.

- Keep: A multi-storey medieval stone keep retaining elements from the 12th century and later additions; the keep is the most prominent surviving interior structure.

How to Get to Coity Castle #
Coity lies just northwest of Bridgend town; from Bridgend take the B4281 toward Coity village (about 3-4 km). The ruins are a short walk from the village centre and reachable on local footpaths from nearby residential roads. The nearest major station is Bridgend railway station (approx. 2-3 miles); taxis or a 30-40 minute walk connect the station to the village.
Tips for Visiting Coity Castle #
- Enter from the village side to see the best-preserved gatehouse and the defensive ditch.
- Bring a torch to peer into the lower chamber vaults on dim days - many surfaces are carved by time and worth close inspection.
- Respect private property: parts of the site border occupied land and local walkers co-exist with the ruins.
Best Time to Visit Coity Castle #
Best on dry days between late spring and early autumn to avoid muddy approaches and slippery grass. The castle is an outdoor ruin with informal access.
