Coipasa Lake is a saline lake on the Altiplano in Oruro Department, western Bolivia. It is part of the endorheic salt-lake system of the high Andean plateau and lies within an arid, high-elevation landscape.
The lake is shallow and saline, surrounded by salt flats, volcanic terrain and puna grassland typical of the Bolivian high plateau. It is less extensive than the nearby Salar de Uyuni but forms part of the same regional hydrological and geological setting.
Coipasa functions as a natural basin in an area with very low annual precipitation and strong seasonal temperature ranges; vegetation and wildlife are adapted to the saline, high-altitude conditions.
The lake lies in Oruro Department on Bolivia’s western plateau, in a remote Andean region that is accessed from regional roads linking towns and salt-flat routes.
