Cofre de Perote

Cofre de Perote is a high volcanic mountain in the state of Veracruz, Mexico, notable for its distinct rounded summit and a summit cross. It is one of the higher peaks in the region and is a landmark visible across central Veracruz.

The mountain’s slopes are forested at lower elevations and give way to alpine terrain near the summit, offering hiking routes and viewpoints over surrounding valleys. Visitors commonly access marked trails and a summit area that provides wide-ranging views.

Cofre de Perote is a volcanic edifice and is classified among Mexico’s high-altitude volcanic peaks; it is considered dormant. The mountain is protected within a park area that preserves native pine and fir forests and provides recreational access.

The peak lies in central Veracruz near the town of Perote and is east of the larger Pico de Orizaba massif. It is accessible by road from regional towns in Veracruz state.

• Elevation: Summit elevation is 4,282 metres, so altitude acclimatization and cold-weather clothing are necessary for climbs above the tree line.
• Park and trails: Part of a national park area with marked trails and pine forests on the lower slopes; seasonal snow reaches the summit outside summer months.
