The Cocora Valley is a high Andean valley in Quindío Department, Colombia, famous for its stands of the national wax palm (Ceroxylon quindiuense). The site is one of the country’s most recognizable natural landscapes and a focal point of regional conservation.

The valley is notable for tall wax palms that in places tower above surrounding cloud forest; individual trees can reach about 60 metres. Trails and dirt roads cross the valley and adjacent slopes, with popular routes linking the valley floor to viewpoints and the nearby Acaime hummingbird reserve. Hikes and horseback rides of a few hours to a full day are common ways to explore the landscape, and the mix of open valley, streams and cloud forest supports hummingbirds and other Andean birdlife.

The valley’s wax palm populations declined under agricultural pressure in the 20th century and were later the subject of conservation efforts; the wax palm is protected under Colombian law and treated as a symbol of national heritage. Areas of the valley and surrounding cloud forest have been managed to balance tourism and habitat protection.

Cocora sits in the central Cordillera of the Colombian Andes, in Quindío Department, immediately north of the town of Salento and within reach of the regional city of Armenia. The valley is accessed by road from Salento and lies amid steep, forested Andean slopes.

  • Wax palms: Wax palms can reach heights of up to 60 metres and the valley sits at elevations of roughly 1,800-2,400 metres, creating frequent mist and cloud-forest conditions.
  • Best time and access: Most access routes start in the nearby town of Salento; early morning visits improve chances to see hummingbirds and lower cloud cover for photography.
