Coba
Archaeological Site Ancient Maya city with highest Yucatán pyramid
Raised stone causeways and the Nohoch Mul pyramid draw explorers to Coba, a sprawling Maya site in Quintana Roo. Visitors bike or walk between stelae, pyramids, and jungle paths, often combining the visit with nearby cenotes and local Maya communities.
Coba is a major ancient Maya archaeological site in the municipality of Tulum, Quintana Roo, located inland in the northeastern Yucatán Peninsula. The site is notable for its large scale and dispersed layout across lowland forest.
The complex is centered on several plaza groups and a number of large mounds; the most prominent structure is the pyramid commonly called Nohoch Mul, which rises about 42 metres. The ruined city includes an extensive system of raised stone roads and a wide distribution of smaller temples and ballcourts across several square kilometres. Visitors typically explore the main central groups on foot or by bicycle along shaded paths.
Coba was built and occupied by the Maya; its main period of construction and peak activity occurred during the Classic to Terminal Classic periods. Over time the site was partially abandoned and later recorded by explorers and archaeologists, with ongoing restoration and clearing revealing plazas, stelae and causeways.
The ruins sit within lowland tropical forest in central Quintana Roo, inland from the Caribbean coast. The site is reached from nearby coastal towns and is set among lagoons and seasonally wet forest.
- Best viewpoint: Top of the main pyramid provides wide views across the forest canopy and the dispersed site layout, making it the best single vantage point.
- Site conditions: The site contains thousands of mounds and stone structures partially reclaimed by jungle, so expect uneven paths and short walks between groups.
What to See #
- Nohoch Mul: A large pyramid known locally as Nohoch Mul rises about 42 metres and gives panoramic views over the surrounding lowland forest; it is one of the tallest Maya pyramids on the Yucatán Peninsula.
- Sacbeob and architectural groups: An extensive network of elevated stone causeways (sacbeob) and dispersed architectural groups spread across a lowland forest matrix, with several raised plazas and small temples clustered around the main ceremonial centre.
How to Get to Coba #
The Maya site of Cobá is inland on the Yucatán Peninsula, roughly 40-50 km northwest of Tulum (about a 45-60 minute drive depending on route). It’s commonly reached by car or by colectivo/shared minivan from Tulum or from Valladolid; a number of tour operators and local buses also run day trips from Playa del Carmen and Tulum. The archaeological zone has a parking area and the main ruins are a short walk from the entrance, with bicycles and bike taxis available for getting around the site.
Tips for Visiting Coba #
- Get to Coba right at opening to avoid heat and midday coach groups and to have quieter access to the broad archaeological zone; many visitors arrive later and find paths crowded.
- Rent a bicycle or hire a local tricycle taxi (bicitaxi) at the entrance - Coba is spread out and these are the fastest, most common ways to see distant groups of ruins in a single visit.
- Take time to follow the sacbe (ancient raised roads) near the main plaza - the network of causeways and smaller stelae is often missed by visitors who stick only to the central pyramid area.
Best Time to Visit Coba #
Coba is best visited in the dry season (November-April), preferably early in the morning to avoid heat, humidity and afternoon rains.
