Coast Mountains
Mountains Coastal mountain range along British Columbia and Yukon
Rugged coastal range in British Columbia and southern Yukon with glaciers, fjords and alpine terrain. Outdoor visitors pursue mountaineering, glacier travel, backcountry skiing and scenic drives along coastal corridors.
The Coast Mountains are a major mountain range of the Pacific North American Cordillera, running along the western edge of British Columbia into southeastern Alaska and parts of Yukon. The range is notable for its extensive granitic batholiths and heavy glaciation.
Alpine climbers and mountaineers come for rugged granite peaks and large icefields; the highest named summit, Mount Waddington, reaches about 4,019 meters. In the southern sections near Vancouver recreational visitors can access alpine parks, day hikes and scenic drives, while the northern stretches offer wilderness mountaineering and glacial travel.
The Coast Mountains were uplifted and shaped by long-term tectonic activity related to subduction and terrane accretion along the western margin of North America. Repeated glaciations during the Pleistocene carved deep valleys and fjords and left the modern pattern of peaks, icefields and coastal inlets.
The range runs roughly north-south along the Pacific coast of British Columbia into the Alaska panhandle, with parts extending toward southern Yukon. Major population centers such as Vancouver lie to the southeast of the southern Coast Mountains; much of the range is remote and accessed from coastal corridors or interior routes.
- Access and viewing: Sea-to-Sky and other coastal corridors provide dramatic roadside views in the southern sector, while northern and interior areas require logging roads, long drives or air access for remote access.
What to See #
- Major subranges: The Coast Mountains are divided into subranges including the Boundary Ranges, Kitimat Ranges and Pacific Ranges, each with distinct glaciers and peaks running roughly north-south along the Pacific coast.
- Mount Waddington and nearby peaks: Mount Waddington, the highest summit of the range, rising to about 4,019 meters and forming the highest concentration of rugged, glaciated peaks in the Coast Mountains.
- Icefields and glaciers: Large icefields such as the Juneau Icefield and extensive valley glaciers that feed coastal fjords and rivers, offering glacier travel and alpine climbing opportunities.
How to Get to Coast Mountains #
Access points vary widely: from the south use Vancouver and drive north on the Sea to Sky Highway (BC‑99) toward Whistler; from the north use the Alaska Highway into Yukon. Many interior valleys require river or air access and local guides for backcountry travel.
Tips for Visiting Coast Mountains #
- If approaching from Yukon, base yourself in Whitehorse and arrange guided glacier or river trips-many Coast Mountains areas are remote and require outfitters.
- Weather changes quickly; prepare for sudden cold and wet even in summer.
- Respect park and provincial regulations-many access roads cross protected or First Nations lands.
Best Time to Visit Coast Mountains #
Best visited in summer when trails and lodges are most accessible; plan itineraries with local outfitters for remote sections.
