CN Tower
Church Iconic communications tower with panoramic city views
Toronto’s CN Tower offers observation decks, a glass floor, EdgeWalk and wide views over Lake Ontario and the downtown skyline. Visitors come for panoramic city views, the revolving restaurant and high-altitude experiences.
The CN Tower is a communications and observation tower in downtown Toronto, Ontario, completed in 1976 and rising to 553.3 metres. It was built as both a telecommunications structure and a public observation destination.
The tower offers multiple viewing experiences including indoor observation areas, a glass floor and higher platforms that provide panoramic views across the city and over Lake Ontario. There is also a commercial dining option in the tower and paid experiences such as the harnessed outdoor EdgeWalk.
Constructed by Canadian National in the 1970s to improve broadcast signals and serve as a tourist attraction, the tower opened in 1976 and has since been a prominent part of Toronto’s skyline. Over time it has added visitor facilities and commercial attractions to accommodate growing tourism.
Sited on the Toronto waterfront just south of the downtown core, the CN Tower sits adjacent to the Rogers Centre and close to major transit links and waterfront promenades.
- Height and completion: Stands 553.3 metres tall and was completed in 1976, making it one of Toronto's most recognizable landmarks.
- EdgeWalk details: The EdgeWalk experience takes place around the main pod at about 356 metres above ground and is weather dependent.
- Best time to visit: Best visited late afternoon for city-to-lake views and at night for an illuminated skyline; tickets can sell out on busy weekends.
What to See #
- EdgeWalk: An outdoor harnessed walk on the tower's main pod that takes participants around the exterior ledge at height, operated as a paid experience with safety briefing and weight limits.
- Glass Floor and LookOut Level: A reinforced glass floor and adjacent indoor/outdoor viewing areas providing direct downward views of the city from the main observation pod.
- SkyPod: A higher viewing platform above the main decks that offers longer-range views toward Lake Ontario and the Toronto skyline on clear days.
How to Get to CN Tower #
The CN Tower is adjacent to Toronto’s Union Station in downtown Toronto. Take the TTC subway Line 1 to Union Station (or GO Transit to Union Station); from the station it’s a roughly 8-12 minute walk to the tower at Bremner Boulevard/Front Street West beside the Rogers Centre.
By car use exits off the Gardiner Expressway to York Street or the Union Station/Bremner Boulevard area; paid parking is available nearby.
Tips for Visiting CN Tower #
- Reserve a timed‑entry ticket online and aim for the hour around sunset if you want both daylight and night views - otherwise go early morning on weekdays to avoid school groups and tour buses.
- Buy tickets or restaurant reservations (360° Restaurant) in advance to skip entrance queues and secure the best viewing slots; special experiences (EdgeWalk, SkyPod) require separate booking.
- If the main observation level is busy, head to the lower glass floor and the SkyPod (if open) for different perspectives - many visitors concentrate only on the main viewing deck.
Best Time to Visit CN Tower #
For the CN Tower, visit in shoulder seasons or winter weekdays to avoid the heaviest crowds at the indoor/observation areas.
