Cluny Abbey
Religious Site Ruined medieval Benedictine abbey influential in Europe
Site of the medieval Benedictine abbey in Burgundy, now largely ruinous. Visitors study monastic architecture, archaeological remains and local museums that interpret Cluny’s medieval importance.
Cluny Abbey is a former Benedictine monastery in Cluny, Burgundy, France, founded in 910 and renowned as the centre of the Cluniac reform movement. In the 10th to 12th centuries it became one of medieval Europe’s most powerful monastic institutions and its large Romanesque church was among the continent’s greatest.
Visitors primarily see extensive ruins and archaeological remains that mark the footprint of the medieval abbey, including the surviving fabric of the abbot’s palace and the foundations of the great Romanesque church known as Cluny III. Interpretive displays explain the abbey’s former scale and artistic patronage.
The monastery was established by Duke William I of Aquitaine and placed under direct papal protection to pursue a strict Benedictine observance; major building phases include the Romanesque Cluny III begun in 1088. The abbey accumulated wealth and influence across the high Middle Ages but was largely stripped and demolished during the French Revolution in the late 18th century.
