Cliff of Bandiagara (Land of the Dogons)
Historical Site Sandstone escarpment home to Dogon villages and heritage
The Bandiagara Escarpment in Mali hosts Dogon cliff villages carved into sandstone faces; cultural tours focus on traditional architecture, cliff-side settlements, rock formations and local ceremonies.
The Cliff of Bandiagara, often called the Land of the Dogons, is a dramatic sandstone escarpment and cultural landscape in Mali’s Mopti Region that supports centuries-old Dogon settlements. The escarpment and its villages are recognized for their cultural significance and unique cliff-side architecture.
The site includes an escarpment of roughly 150 km with sheer faces and plateaus that host clustered villages, narrow footpaths and seasonal farms. Highlights are the cliff villages, traditional granaries and the cliff-side Tellem dwellings and rock shelters that illustrate successive occupations and local adaptations to a rugged environment.
Dogon communities built and adapted the settlements over many centuries, developing distinctive wooden architecture, ritual spaces and agricultural terraces. Archaeological evidence in rock shelters records earlier habitation by the Tellem people prior to Dogon settlement.
Geographically the escarpment runs along the southern edge of the Sahel, descending to the plains to the south; the nearest larger town is Bandiagara. The landscape is arid to semi-arid with rocky outcrops, cultivated plateau fields and narrow valley bottoms.
- Viewing points: Best views of the escarpment are from cliff-top vantage points near the villages of Sangha and Ireli, where the cliff drops away to the plains below.
- Local access and guides: The area is inhabited and access to some villages requires permission from local elders; guided visits with local Dogon guides are recommended for cultural sensitivity and navigation.
What to See #
- Bandiagara Escarpment: A sandstone escarpment running roughly north-south that extends for about 150 km and rises as much as 500 m in places, providing the physical backbone of the site.
