Cleveland Stadium, commonly called Municipal Stadium, was a multiuse stadium in Cleveland, Ohio, that opened in 1931 and was demolished in 1996. It served as a major sports and event venue for much of the 20th century.
During its lifetime the stadium hosted professional baseball and football, large-scale concerts, and civic events; its large seating capacity made it a focal point for major events in Cleveland. Today interest is historical, focused on its role in the city’s sporting past.
Built as a municipal sports venue in the early 1930s, it served as the home for the city’s Major League Baseball and National Football League teams at various times. The stadium was altered and expanded over the decades and was taken down in the 1990s as part of waterfront redevelopment.
The stadium stood on Cleveland’s lakefront near Lake Erie, in the city’s downtown lakefront district; the site has since been redeveloped.
