Clemenswerth Palace
Castle Octagonal Baroque hunting palace in Lower Saxony
Clemenswerth in Sögel is an 18th‑century hunting palace laid out as a radial ensemble of pavilions; visitors study its symmetrical plan, period furnishings and surrounding parkland.
Clemenswerth Palace (Schloss Clemenswerth) is an 18th-century hunting complex in Sögel, Lower Saxony, arranged around a central pavilion with a ring of associated hunting pavilions. The geometric star plan and axial avenues are the defining architectural features of the estate.
The layout centres on an octagonal main pavilion from which eight small pavilions radiate symmetrically; the pavilions were used in connection with hunting and courtly entertainment. The ensemble is set within formal avenues and parkland that were integral to the hunting concept.
Commissioned in the mid-18th century for Clemens August of Bavaria, the complex was conceived as a hunting lodge and representational landscape for an 18th-century prince-bishop. Over time the ensemble has been conserved and adapted for public access and museum use while retaining its original radial plan.
The palace stands in the municipality of Sögel in the Emsland district of Lower Saxony; the complex and its avenues are set within lowland parkland and are reachable from nearby regional roads.
- Star-shaped layout: The complex is laid out as a star-shaped hunting ensemble with a strict central axis and radial symmetry, designed for ceremonial hunts and court display.
- Museum and grounds: The site operates as a museum complex with historic interiors and seasonal opening hours; the surrounding avenues and parkland are part of the historic composition.

- Central pavilion: A central octagonal pavilion that forms the geometric heart of the complex and was used as the principal ceremonial and residential space.
- Peripheral hunting pavilions: Eight symmetrically arranged hunting pavilions set at the points of a star and connected visually by radiating avenues through surrounding parkland.
