Main image

Clarion Island (Isla Clarión) is a remote volcanic island in the eastern Pacific that is administratively part of the Revillagigedo Islands, Colima, Mexico. It is notable for its isolation and for being part of a recognized biosphere and marine conservation area.

The island offers steep coastal cliffs, limited shorelines and largely undisturbed seabird and marine habitats rather than developed visitor facilities. Access is tightly controlled and visits are typically scientific, conservation-focused or by special permit rather than regular tourism.

Clarion is volcanic in origin and has been visited intermittently by sailors, researchers and Mexican authorities; it has not supported a significant permanent civilian population. Management and visitation have shifted toward conservation in recent decades as the Revillagigedo group received increasing protection.

The island lies in the eastern Pacific Ocean well offshore from mainland Mexico and is administered as part of Colima. It is one of the remote Revillagigedo islands grouped far west of the Mexican mainland.

  • Protected status: Part of the Revillagigedo Archipelago and managed within Mexico's marine and island conservation framework.

How to Get to Clarion Island #

Clarión Island (Isla Clarión) is remote in the Revillagigedo Archipelago and has no regular public transport. It is reached only by private vessel or organized expedition cruise from Mexican Pacific ports (for example Manzanillo or Cabo San Lucas); voyages are lengthy and landings are subject to operator schedules and permits. If planning a visit, arrange transport with a licensed operator and check landing permissions with Mexican authorities.

Tips for Visiting Clarion Island #

  • Clarión (Clarion Island) is part of the remote Revillagigedo Archipelago and is only reachable via licensed expedition liveaboard boats-plan trips through specialist operators out of Cabo San Lucas and expect multi-day voyages.
  • Access is restricted and regulated as a protected area; secure permits and confirm landing permissions with your operator well in advance, since many visits focus on offshore diving and pelagic wildlife rather than island landings.
  • Schedule travel in the region's normal expedition season (austral/late winter to spring for pelagic encounters) and be prepared for long transit times and strict biosecurity rules-this is a wilderness destination with minimal facilities.

Best Time to Visit Clarion Island #

Visit during the November-May period when seas are typically calmer and access by boat is more reliable.

Dry / Outside hurricane season
Nov-May · 24-30°C
Calmer seas and clearer conditions make this the preferred period for visiting by liveaboard vessels and for diving/sea access.
Hurricane / Wet season
Jun-Oct · 26-30°C
Higher risk of storms and rough seas during the eastern Pacific hurricane season; access is limited and conditions are rougher.
