Claypotts Castle is a late 16th-century Z-plan tower house near Dundee in eastern Scotland. It is noted for the survival of its original plan and external stonework.
The exterior presents a clear example of the Z-plan layout with corner towers and ornate corbelled turrets; the castle’s fabric remains largely intact, which attracts students of architecture and local walkers. The site is compact and typically viewed from nearby paths rather than as a large estate visit.
Constructed in the late 1500s as a fortified residence for a local laird, the building reflects the defensive domestic architecture of that period in Scotland. It has survived largely intact and has been the subject of conservation interest.
The castle stands to the east of Dundee on the coastal plain toward Broughty Ferry, accessible from local roads and public footpaths.
- Date and design: Built in the late 16th century as a fortified laird's house, it is a well-preserved example of the Scottish Z-plan castle type.
- Architectural note: The castle's distinctive plan features a central rectangular block with towers at diagonally opposite corners, making it one of the better-preserved examples near Dundee.
