City Park (Budapest)

City Park (Városliget) is a large public park in Budapest’s District XIV that functions as the city’s principal urban green space and cultural precinct. It contains major attractions including thermal baths, historic buildings, a zoo, a boating lake and the monumental Heroes’ Square at one entrance.

Key destinations within the park include the Széchenyi Thermal Bath, the neo-eclectic Vajdahunyad Castle, the Budapest Zoo and Botanical Garden, a central lake used for boating and skating, and Heroes’ Square with the Millennium Monument and nearby museums. Pathways, tree-lined avenues and lawns connect these sites and support informal recreation, events and sports.

The park evolved from 18th- and 19th-century landscaping and urban expansion; features such as the zoo (founded in 1866) and Vajdahunyad Castle (erected for the 1896 Millennial Exhibition) reflect its role in Budapest’s cultural development. The Széchenyi Baths were opened in 1913 and remain a major draw.

City Park sits just northeast of Budapest’s central ring road, within the urban fabric of Pest. Major access points are on Andrássy Avenue and the Grand Boulevard; the park is easily reached by metro, tram and bus services from central Budapest.
