City God Temple of Shanghai

The City God Temple of Shanghai (Chenghuang Miao) is a historic urban temple complex in Shanghai’s Old City, long associated with the worship of the city’s protective deity. The site functions both as a religious temple and as the focal point of a traditional commercial district.

The complex consists of traditional temple halls and courtyards set within a dense ensemble of lanes and market streets; it is commonly visited together with the adjacent retail area for its architecture, local foods, and cultural atmosphere. The surrounding bazaar is a busy pedestrian area noted for street food, souvenir shops, and restored traditional shopfronts.

The City God Temple has roots in Shanghai’s pre-modern urban fabric and was historically the focal religious site for the Old City; buildings on the site were rebuilt and renovated at various times during the Ming and Qing periods and later. The temple and the adjoining commercial streets have been maintained and restored in recent decades as part of conservation and tourism development.

The temple complex sits within Shanghai’s Old City (near the Yuyuan Garden area) on the Huangpu district side of the historic center, a short distance northeast of the Huangpu River and accessible by several metro lines and nearby tourist routes.
