Citadel of Jaca
Monument 18th-century star-shaped fortress in Jaca, Aragon
Jaca’s 16th‑century star‑shaped citadel in Aragon houses a military museum and defensive ramparts; visitors tour bastions, walk the moat and use Jaca as a gateway to the Pyrenees.
The Citadel of Jaca (Ciudadela de Jaca) is a Renaissance-era fortification in the town of Jaca in Aragon, built as a bastioned fortress to secure a strategic frontier position. Its near-pentagonal, star-shaped design remains the defining feature of the complex and dominates the town centre.
The fort’s principal attraction is the well-preserved system of ramparts, bastions and moats that form a compact defensive circuit. Paths across the curtain walls and bastions provide close-up views of the fort geometry and of the surrounding town; the interior courtyard and former service buildings are periodically used for exhibitions and cultural events.
Constructed in the post-medieval period as part of state frontier defences, the citadel replaced earlier medieval fortifications and served as a garrison installation for several centuries. Its military role diminished over time and the structure has been conserved as a historic monument and public space.
The citadel sits within the town of Jaca in the foothills of the Spanish Pyrenees, occupying a central position close to the town’s main streets and easily reached on foot from Jaca’s historic centre.
