Citadel of Damascus
Castle Massive medieval citadel at Damascus's Old City entrance
Medieval fortress on the edge of Damascus’s Old City, the Citadel presents massive stone towers and battlements; visitors come for its archaeology and proximity to the Umayyad Mosque and old souks.
The Citadel of Damascus is the fortified enclosure at the northwest corner of the Old City of Damascus, Syria, with origins stretching back to antiquity and major medieval fabric surviving. It is one of the city’s principal defensive monuments.
Walkways along the battlements, towers and surviving gate structures illustrate medieval military architecture and offer views over parts of the Old City. The citadel’s massive masonry and towers are the main features visible from surrounding streets.
The site has been fortified since Roman and Byzantine times and was substantially rebuilt and modified by successive Islamic dynasties, including Ayyubid and Mamluk work in the medieval period. It later saw Ottoman repairs and was used as a military stronghold through the Ottoman era and into modern times.
The citadel occupies the northwest edge of Damascus’s walled Old City, within the Damascus Governorate. It sits amid the dense urban fabric of the historic centre rather than in open countryside.
