Citadel of Aleppo
Castle Medieval hilltop fortress dominating Aleppo's old city
An ancient fortified hilltop overlooking Aleppo’s old city, the Citadel features layered fortifications and panoramic views. Travelers explore ramparts, archaeological remains and nearby souks.
The Citadel of Aleppo is a major hilltop fortress that dominates the old city of Aleppo, with archaeological evidence of occupation from Hellenistic times and extensive medieval rebuilding. Its most recognisable fabric results from major fortification campaigns carried out during the Ayyubid period in the 12th and 13th centuries.
Visitors encounter fortified gateways, ramparts, vaulted halls and the remains of palatial and administrative buildings within the inner enclosure, together with steps and passages used for defensive movement. The citadel’s elevated position offers wide views over Aleppo’s old city.
The site has been continuously reused and redeveloped over millennia, serving as a defensive and administrative centre for successive rulers; Ayyubid and later Islamic-period works define much of the visible structure today. In recent years the citadel suffered damage during the Syrian civil war and has been the focus of conservation and repair efforts.
The fortress sits on a natural mound in the centre of Aleppo’s historic core, rising above dense urban quarters and close to the city’s main historic souks.
