Cistern of Philoxenos
Archaeological Site Large Byzantine subterranean cistern in Istanbul
Beneath Istanbul’s Sultanahmet district, the Cistern of Philoxenos offers a Byzantine underground reservoir lined with columns and walkways. Tourists visit for its atmospheric lighting, column forest and proximity to Hagia Sophia and the Hippodrome.
The Cistern of Philoxenos is a Byzantine-era subterranean water reservoir located in Istanbul’s historic peninsula. It preserves a large hypostyle chamber of stone columns that once stored and regulated urban water supplies.
Constructed in the Byzantine period to serve the water needs of the imperial city, the cistern formed part of a broader network of reservoirs and aqueducts. It survived the Ottoman period and later centuries, and has been consolidated for public access and display.
The cistern sits within Istanbul’s Sultanahmet quarter on the historic peninsula, close to other major Byzantine and Ottoman monuments such as the Hagia Sophia and the former hippodrome area.
