Chūson-ji is a Buddhist temple complex in the town of Hiraizumi, Iwate Prefecture, in northern Honshu, Japan. It is best known for its gilded Konjikidō (Golden Hall), completed in 1124, and is part of the UNESCO World Heritage listing for Hiraizumi.
The complex’s highlight is the Konjikidō, a small two-storey, gold-covered chapel and mausoleum which stands out visually on the temple grounds. The site also includes a museum that holds lacquerwork, Buddhist statuary and other medieval artifacts, plus temple halls and landscaped precincts that visitors can walk between.
Chūson-ji was developed into a major temple complex by the Northern Fujiwara rulers of Hiraizumi during the late 11th and early 12th centuries; the Konjikidō was completed as a funerary hall in 1124. After the fall of the Northern Fujiwara the temple declined, and surviving buildings and treasures have been conserved and presented to the public through later restorations.
The temple sits in the town of Hiraizumi in Iwate Prefecture, a historic town in northern Japan known for several medieval temple sites. The complex is accessed from the town center and is set among urban and cultivated land rather than isolated countryside.
