Churfirsten
Mountains Distinctive Swiss mountain ridge overlooking Lake Walen
Rising above the Walensee, the Churfirsten are a line of seven limestone peaks in eastern Switzerland. Hikers and climbers tackle ridge trails and viewpoints that look down onto the lake and the Rhine valley.
The Churfirsten are a distinctive group of seven limestone peaks on the south side of the Walensee in the Canton of St. Gallen, northeastern Switzerland, forming a sharp east-west ridge that defines the local skyline.
The ridge extends roughly 10 kilometres and the summits reach elevations of about 2,300 metres, with steep north faces that rise abruptly from the lake by up to around 1,700 metres. The range is popular for hiking, ridge traverses and panoramic viewpoints offering views over the Walensee, the Rhine valley and the surrounding Alps.
The Churfirsten are the product of Alpine uplift and karstic limestone geology; their steep escarpments and layered rock are typical of the region and shape local routes and trails.
The range overlooks the Walensee and sits between the valleys of Toggenburg and the Linth, in eastern Switzerland; nearby settlements on the lake shore and on the mountain side provide access points for trails and lifts.
- Summit group: The chain comprises seven main summits forming an approximately 10-kilometre east-west ridge, with summits reaching roughly 2,300 metres and steep north faces that drop directly toward the Walensee.
