Churchill River (Atlantic)

Churchill River (Atlantic) is a major river in Labrador, Canada, that drains eastwards toward the Atlantic coast and crosses a large, sparsely populated landscape. It is one of Labrador’s principal river systems and is associated with major hydroelectric works.

Stretching across central Labrador, the watercourse passes through deep river valleys, rapids and lakes and is known for its remote, rugged scenery. Recreational uses include fishing and guided river trips in parts of the basin, while other stretches are influenced by hydroelectric reservoirs and infrastructure.

The river has been the focus of large hydroelectric development at Churchill Falls and related projects in the 20th century. Those developments have altered flows and created reservoirs used for power generation.

Geographically the river runs across interior Labrador in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, flowing eastward to the Atlantic coast; the small settlement of Churchill Falls and a few other communities are located along its course. Much of the surrounding region is boreal forest and exposed bedrock.
