Churches of Moldavia
Historical Site Painted monasteries with exterior frescoes and medieval architecture
Painted monasteries of Romania’s Moldavia region display exterior fresco cycles depicting biblical scenes; visitors come for medieval frescoes, Orthodox services and the rolling Bucovina hills.
The Churches of Moldavia are a UNESCO-listed group of painted Orthodox churches and monasteries in northeastern Romania, primarily in Suceava County, dating from the late 15th to the 16th century. They are distinguished by large-scale exterior and interior fresco cycles executed on plastered stone walls.
These monuments display extensive narrative painting that covers façades and interiors with biblical scenes, saints and Last Judgment imagery; the external murals can cover several hundred square metres on a single façade. The best-known sites include Voroneț, Humor, Moldovița and Sucevița, where pictorial programmes remain visible despite weathering.
Construction and decoration were commissioned by Moldavian princes and local boyars between the late 1400s and the 1500s, with patronage from figures such as Stephen the Great and later rulers. Over time some complexes were fortified and restored; conservation and restoration have been ongoing since the 19th and 20th centuries to preserve the fragile polychrome plaster.
All monuments lie in the historic region of Moldavia in northeastern Romania, clustered around the modern towns and communes of Suceava County and adjacent areas. They sit in a rural, hilly landscape of small river valleys and villages, reachable by road from the county towns.
- Fresco highlights: Many of the exterior frescoes depict full biblical cycles including scenes of the Last Judgment, and the pigments include the distinctive "Voroneț blue".
- Visitor note: Several of the sites are still active monastic communities, so modest dress and quiet behavior are requested; visiting hours vary by monastery.

How to Get to Churches of Moldavia #
The Painted Churches and monasteries of northern Moldavia are clustered in Suceava County and are most easily visited by car from the regional centre of Suceava. Driving times from Suceava to individual monasteries (Voroneț, Moldovița, Sucevița, Putna, etc.) typically range from about 30 minutes up to 1.5 hours depending on the site; the monasteries are on county roads with parking nearby and short walks (minutes) to the complexes. Regular regional buses and organized day tours operate from Suceava and other nearby towns for visitors without a car.
Tips for Visiting Churches of Moldavia #
- Start at the most famous monasteries (Voroneț, Humor) early in the day to beat the coach‑group arrivals and leave smaller sites like Arbore or Probota for later when crowds thin.
- Avoid Sundays and major Orthodox feast days if you want uninterrupted access to frescoed interiors - services will limit photography and movement inside the churches.
- Hire a local guide or use an audio guide to understand the exterior fresco programs; visitors frequently focus on the front façade but the thematic cycles on the sides and rear contain important scenes that are missed without commentary.
