Church of the Primacy of St. Peter
Religious Site Christian shrine on Sea of Galilee marking Peter's primacy
On the northwest shore of the Sea of Galilee, the site commemorates the Apostle Peter’s reinstatement; pilgrims visit the lakeside chapel and nearby mosaics at Tabgha.
The Church of the Primacy of St. Peter is a small chapel at Tabgha on the northwest shore of the Sea of Galilee that marks the place where Christian tradition says Jesus reinstated Peter after the Resurrection.
The chapel stands above remains of earlier Byzantine-period worship at the site and the present small structure dates from the 20th century, built on top of those earlier foundations to preserve the traditional memorial.
Located at Tabgha on the shore of the Sea of Galilee, the chapel is a short drive from Capernaum and other lakeside pilgrimage sites and sits directly at the water’s edge.
- Position at Tabgha: Sits on the northwest shore of the Sea of Galilee at Tabgha, adjacent to the Church of the Multiplication and close to Capernaum.
- Rock slab inside: The chapel is built directly over an exposed rock slab that is the focal point of the site and of most pilgrim visits.
What to See #
- Mensa Christi: A limestone slab inside the chapel, known as the Mensa Christi, traditionally venerated as the table on which Jesus ate with the disciples after the Resurrection.
