A compact single-domed building set on a low rise, the church is noted for its clear, balanced proportions and finely carved stone ornament. It occupies a prominent position at the junction of the Nerl and Klyazma rivers and is frequently photographed from the riverbank and nearby fields. The site is small and visited primarily for the exterior architecture and riverside views rather than interior exhibits.
Commissioned by Prince Andrei Bogolyubsky and completed in 1165, the church served as a princely foundation and a place of worship for the surrounding settlements. It has survived periods of neglect and fluctuating water levels and has undergone conservation work to preserve its medieval fabric.
The church stands in a rural floodplain east of the city of Vladimir, near the village of Bogolyubovo, surrounded by open fields and river channels. Access is by minor roads and footpaths from the nearest settlements; the setting is low-lying and often marshy in wetter months.
