Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Kraków

Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary (St. Mary’s Basilica) sits on Kraków’s Main Market Square and is a principal medieval church in the city. The brick Gothic building is immediately recognisable for its two unequal towers and richly decorated interior.

The interior highlights include the large late-Gothic wooden altarpiece carved by Veit Stoss and numerous chapels and frescoes; the taller tower is the site of the hourly Hejnał trumpet signal. Tours typically cover the nave, chapels and access to the taller tower for city views.

The current Gothic building was completed in stages during the 14th and 15th centuries, replacing earlier structures on the site; the altarpiece was carved in the late 15th century and remains a central work of art. The church has undergone repairs and conservation across centuries following fires and other damage.

The basilica stands on the eastern side of Kraków’s Main Market Square in the old town, a short walk from Wawel Castle and the Royal Route. It is in the heart of Kraków’s historic centre and is highly accessible to visitors on foot.
